This placemat features an image of a painting I did myself on my iPad of one of the many wonderful locations in North Devon, a beautiful part of the country in which I live.
It is a handmade product that I make using the process of sublimation. Each placemat measures 19cm x 23cm and has a thickness of 3.17mm.
The view is one I have looked at many times whilst sitting in this exact spot on the pebbles, whilst the sea laps nearby. This spot, for many years, has been my thinking spot. Many a dilemma has been resolved whilst sitting here. Having spent most of my childhood in Westward Ho! it has changed considerably and yet it hasn’t changed at all!
Charles Kingsley lived in the nearby town of Bideford in the 1850s and it was whilst there that he wrote his novel Westward Ho! The novel became so popular that a group of businessmen saw an opportunity and grabbed it. They built a large hotel to accommodate the many visitors that began to flock to the area and thus the village of Westward Ho! was born. Visitors continue to flock to the area today. With its long golden sands stretching for approximately 2 miles, Westward Ho! beach is a very popular attraction, there are the amusement arcades, the village green which comes to life in the Summer months, and not forgetting dear old ‘Seafield House’ known to locals as ‘The Haunted House’ situated up on the cliffs. I’m sure Westward Ho! has provided many a happy memory for all those that have visited and I hope this painting represents what Westward Ho! therefore means to you as it does to Me.
