Description

This Hartland Quay hard backed placemat features an image of one of the wonderful locations I have painted in North Devon. It forms part of a collection of paintings I have done of locations in the area and when purchased with other placemats in the collection, creates a stunning gift for anyone who loves North Devon.

Not only is Hartland Quay a visually beautiful place to visit, it also has a fascinating history that dates back to 1586 when it was commissioned by a parliamentary bill, sponsored by the likes of Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh. It became a busy port with ships transporting coal, granite, and farm produce.

However, by the end of the 19th century, this was no longer the case, the pier began to be destroyed by storms and because of the introduction of the railway, work maintaining the pier was stopped. The pier is no longer there today but alas this place is well worth a visit. The views of the coastline are breathtaking.

The buildings featured on the placemat include the Hartland Quay Hotel and the Wreckers Retreat Bar. Back in the day, the buildings would have been a malthouse, stables and workers cottages. If only we were able to transport ourselves back in time to experience the hustle and bustle but if you have the imagination, it’s not so hard to imagine the smugglers that may have walked in your footsteps, the conversations that may have been had, the sight of the tall ships arriving into port.
